Steps

  1. /!\ When you have just acquired your property (purchase or rental), it must generally be repaired, such as cleaning, repainting, catching up on a few points, etc

Check list

  1. The operation and condition of all electrical outlets
  2. The opening and closing of all doors, windows, shutters and cupboards
  3. Check which walls are load-bearing (for possible openings)
  4. The presence of rust (c.g: metal door jambs, etc.)
  5. Touch the walls (or use a moisture meter) to check for old water damage (c.g: mold, fungi, blisters, etc.)
  6. /!\ Do not forget to check if you have the telephone network, the eligibility for fiber, the messages from the condominium (if applicable), locate the garbage cans, etc

Cleaning

  1. Use a good sweep (or vacuum) to remove the largest, without forgetting the possible balcony or terrace
  2. If necessary, wash the floor in places where it is encrusted (c.g: the kitchen, etc.)
  3. Magic sponges will be your ally for ceilings, recalcitrant plastics (roller shutter box), etc
  4. /!\ N'oubliez pas sous les meubles, et surtout au dessus !

Purchases / Preparations

  1. /!\ If you plan to buy everything at LeRoyMerlin (or other store), do not forget to make the store card to have an extended deadline for the return of unused items, a telephone line dedicated to professional advice, discounts (maybe even be specially for renovation)!
  2. > If you have holes or gaps, you should:
  3. Remove any pieces inside or around
  4. Use filling plaster in the form of paste (white color) for filling
  5. Respect the instructions, but normally, two spatulas are enough to heat the dough and use it
  6. Let dry 24 hours
  7. Smoothen the area with light weight sandpaper
  8. Clean all dust (or other) with a flat brush (brush or maroufleur)
  9. > If you have rusty areas, you should:
  10. Remove any rust by rubbing the area with a sanding brush (or light weight sandpaper)
  11. Clean all dust (or other) with a flat brush (brush or maroufleur)
  12. > To prepare the walls before painting, you need to:
  13. If you want to paint on tapestry, you will have to prepare all the areas by squaring them with a sanding brush (or sandpaper with low grammage)
  14. If you want to paint on a bare wall, you will have to use an undercoat (high coverage)
  15. > If you need to repaint areas, you need to:
  16. Measure the total area (with a dispenser or laser meter) and plan for around 20% more to cover all losses (bin, brushes, pots, scraps, etc.)
  17. Clean all dust (or other) with a flat brush (brush or maroufleur)
  18. Prepare the walls before painting (c.g: see above)
  19. Protect all electrical outlets and baseboards with painter's tape (25mm and 50mm respectively)
  20. Protect all floors (make them stick with the plinth tape, leaving some slack so as not to tear it when you move over it)
  21. Use paint for walls, ceilings and woodwork (matt white, with high coverage) to paint
  22. Respect the instructions, but normally, it is enough to mix in the shape of 8 (infinite sign) for several minutes, then use it while thinking of covering the pot to prevent it from drying
  23. Clear all angles (wall intersections, plinths, switches, areas inaccessible to the roller, etc.) with a 40mm brush (and an empty jar of jam that will serve as a portable container)
  24. For the roller, use a tray and a 180mm roller, make squares (two lines glued vertically, then while pressing make horizontal lines to spread everything, finally redone vertical lines to smooth everything)
  25. Check that there are no oversights (otherwise fill them in)
  26. Let dry 24 hours
  27. Check again that there are no oversights (otherwise fill them in)
  28. Remove all the scotches and recheck that there is no loss (otherwise correct them)
  29. /!\ If you do not plan to paint the ceiling of a room, you will have to protect the angles with painter's tape (50mm)!
